LATISSE, the eyewash that thickens eyelashes and helps them grow
Updated on
LATISSE solution ® is an ophthalmologic treatment that is used on eyelashes, making them longer, thicker and darker.
LATISSE solution® is a formula containing 0.03% bimatoprost ophthalmologic solution, approved by medical authorities in treating eyelashes with decreased development, or even halted growth (hypotrichosis).
At the beginning it was medication for Glaucoma:
It was medication, Lumigan from Allergan, used for treating glaucoma of the eye that inspired Latisse®. Glaucoma whose main symptom is an increase in IOP (intraocular pressure), Lumigan was initially applied in the form of ophthalmologic drops; the side-effects of this treatment observed by patients was a stimulation in growth and darker coloration of the eyelashes.
LATISSE® is an innovational product, available since the first quarter 2009 in the United States as a treatment that helps eyelashes grow. Used exclusively with a medical prescription, this medication called Latisse® is a 0.03% bimatoprost ophthalmologic solution from Allergan, used in the treatment of eyelash hypotrichosis, a disorder that is expressed by a lack and occasionally even a total absence of eyelashes.
The Latisse® solution works in two ways to stimulate eyelash growth; firstly by increasing the lifetime of the eyelash, its growth phase (anagen phase), and secondly by providing the necessary ingredients for stimulating length growth during this phase.
What we know, is that during clinical trials, most testers noticed a change in their eyelashes, on average, in 4 to 8 weeks. At 16 weeks, 78% of patients noticed a significant increase in their eyelash length, thickness and darkening.
The treatment
Daily treatment is administered to the base of the eyelash on the upper eyelid using an applicator; results are progressively visible from the 8th week, at 16 weeks the final result is obtained, the effect can last up to 5 months (average lifetime of an eyelash) if treatment is stopped.
To maintain the effect, it is recommended to continue the treatment.
Every night before bed, take all your make-up off around the eyes, take out your contact lenses, wash your face thoroughly, once your eyelids are dry, you can apply the Latisse® solution. One single drop of solution on the sterile applicator brush, then apply exclusively to the upper eyelid with a single stroke, the product will run down to the lower eyelid eyelashes if you just close your eyes.
The applicators provided are sterile and, as such, are single-use, one eye only; change the applicator for the other eye, this avoids any risk of contamination from one eye to the other. The product comprises sterile dose packages, which when used should not be put in direct contact with the external environment, fingers, or any other surface, this is to prevent ocular infections. Each box of Latisse comes with 60 disposable applicators.
